PKING (PKU-KIAA Innovation NSFC Group) Project Held its Kick-off Meeting

On November 12, 2018, the kick-off meeting of the PKING (PKU-KIAA Innovation NSFC Group) project was held at the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA), Peking University, with the goal of introducing an overview of the project and launching its execution. More than 30 external participants attended the meeting, including experts and scholars from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Astronomical Observatories, Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, Purple Mountain Observatory, University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Tsinghua University, Nanjing University, Xiamen University, Yunnan University, and Tianjin Normal University. 


 

The opening ceremony of the meeting was chaired by Luis C. Ho, Director of KIAA, who first expressed his warm welcome to all the attendees and appreciation for their support to this project. Then he introduced the background, the original research direction, and the group members of PKING, hoping that the project can promote the development of KIAA and DoA (Department of Astronomy), and the whole astronomy discipline at Peking University.

Peiwen Ji, former Executive Deputy Director of Division of Mathematics & Physics of NSFC, and Hui Cai, Deputy Director of the Office of Scientific Research at PKU, explained the significance of the NSFC Group Innovation Project, affirmed the reputation of KIAA as a highly internationalized institute of excellence, and expressed their hopes that PKING will achieve good achievements.

Jing Wang, Xian Chen, and Linhua Jiang, leaders in charge of the three main research directions (interstellar medium, gravitational astrophysics, and sky-survey science), summarized the main plans of their subgroup, followed by a series of highlight science talks by individual group members.
