To promote the successful launch of the early science programs of the China Space Station Telescope (CSST), Peking University will host the “2025 KIAA Forum and CSST Early Galaxy Science Workshop” on October 25–26, 2025. The CSST is China’s first optical space telescope and one of the most important astronomical projects of the coming decade. As its scientific operations approach, it is urgent to build a nationwide consensus, propose key scientific goals and observation strategies for the initial survey stage, and fully leverage the advantages of CSST.
Conference Objectives
This workshop will build upon existing CSST early science proposals and invite colleagues from across the astronomical community to discuss early science topics on galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN). The meeting aims to define the key survey fields and scientific directions, establish working groups, and foster collaborations to coordinate research tasks. Emphasis will also be placed on cross-disciplinary connections with Galactic and cosmological sciences, thereby advancing the early scientific output of CSST.
Suggested Scientific Goals
We have compiled a series of early extragalactic science proposals that cover nearly all major areas of extragalactic astronomy. The preliminary focus includes:
● Four major CSST target fields
○ CSST Deep and Ultra-Deep Fields: candidate regions include COSMOS and the North Ecliptic Pole.
○ Nearby Galaxy Clusters: such as Fornax, Coma, and Virgo.
○ Nearby Galaxies: in collaboration with the Milky Way science team, e.g., M31 and M33.
○ Strongly Lensed Galaxy Clusters: in collaboration with cosmology teams, e.g., Abell 2744.
● Priority coverage regions for the main CSST survey.
● Other scientific goals: including early explorations with CSST’s auxiliary science instruments.
Discussion Format
● The meeting will be organized into several themes, roughly aligned with the scientific goals: CSST 10 deg² ultra-deep field, North Ecliptic Pole deep field, nearby clusters, nearby galaxies, strongly lensed clusters, and other science objectives.
● For each theme, proposal representatives will give short presentations (≈10 minutes).
● After the presentations, discussions will focus on forming working groups and defining collaboration plans to ensure effective communication and concrete outcomes.
