Former PhD Student Feige Wang Awarded the 2019 Hubble Fellow

Feige Wang(王飞格)

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has selected 24 new Fellows for its prestigious NASA Hubble Fellowship Program (NHFP) in 2019, which is one of the most prestigious and competitive postdoctoral fellowships in astronomy. Former PhD student Feige Wang(王飞格) of the Department of AstronomyDoA, School of Physics at Peking University has been awarded the Hubble Fellow.

Feige Wang received his bachelor’s in physics from Shandong University and obtained his PhD in astrophysics from Peking University in July 2017. In November 2017, Feige started a postdoctoral position in the ENIGMA group led by Prof. Joseph F. Hennawi at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and will join University of Arizona to continue his research this autumn as a Hubble Fellow.

Feige’s research focuses on the formation of the earliest quasars, the brightest objects in the Universe which are thought to be powered by supermassive black holes. In particular, he is constructing the largest quasar sample at the epoch of reionization and measuring the cosmic evolution of these luminous quasars by mining deep all-sky optical and infrared sky surveys. As a Hubble Fellow, Feige will use spectroscopic observations, over nearly the full range of the electromagnetic spectrum, of these reionization-era quasars obtained from both ground-based and space telescopes to investigate the cosmic reionization, the accretion history of the first generation supermassive black holes, and the co-evolution between supermassive black holes and their host galaxies.

The NASA Hubble Fellowship Program enables outstanding postdoctoral scientists to pursue independent research across NASA Astrophysics, using theory, observation, experimentation, or instrument development. Each fellowship provides the awardee up to three years of support.
