On the occasion of the launch of a Max Planck partner group led by Prof. Jinyi Shangguan and the inauguration of the bi-lateral collaboration between KIAA and MPE I will give an overview of Europe's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) and its designated first light camera MICADO, which, together, will form the biggest eye on the sky by the end of this decade. I will summarize design, status, and capabilities and give an outline of the science cases an synergies with other telescopes and instruments, with special emphasis on those cases where KIAA and MPE have a common interest.
