On November 21, 2020, the opening ceremony of Chinese Space Station Telescope Peking University Science Center (CSST PKU Center) was held at the Yingjie Exchange Center of Peking University. The ceremony was organized by China Manned Space Engineering Office (CMSEO) and co-organized by Advance Technology Institute (ATI) and Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at PKU.

In attendance were ZHOU Jianping, Chief Designer of China Manned Space Project, HAO Chun, Director General of China Manned Space Agency (CMSA), GU Yidong, Chief Expert of Space Science of China Manned Space Project, XIE Xincheng, Deputy Director of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), GAO Ming, Director of Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization of Chinese Academy of Sciences, HAO Ping, President of PKU, HUANG Ru, Vice President of PKU, as well as colleagues from other universities and institutes, including National Astronomical Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC, CAS), Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of CAS, Tsinghua University, Sun Yat-sen University, and professors and researchers from PKU Astronomy. HAO Ping, President of PKU, gave welcome remarks. He noted the great significance of the establishment of the center to the China Manned Space Engineering field. He stressed that we should take full advantage of the disciplines and talents at PKU and collaborate closely with other astronomy institutes and universities to promote the frontier science research. He also stated that PKU will give full support to the center to build it into a national center with great international influence, a high-end science and technology talents training base, and a science collaboration and exchange platform.

HAO Chun, Director General of CMSA, also gave a speech at the ceremony. He stated that as the most important space science facility, the Chinese Space Station Telescope will be the largest and the most advanced telescope in China. The science research is the key to fulfill the goals of the telescope. With the long history, high international reputation, and remarkable science advantages of PKU, the CSST PKU Center will gather the greatest research teams at home and abroad to promote the astronomy research in China to a world-leading level.

GU Yidon and GAO Ming also delivered speeches, expressing their expectations for CSST PKU Center to play a significant role in the CSST research work, to achieve major research breakthroughs, and to make great contributions to the innovative progress of science and the advancement of human society.

The CSST PKU Center Construction Advisory Meeting was hosted by CHENG Xu, Director of ATI of PKU. CHEN Jiansheng, Founding Director of Department of Astronomy (DoA) of PKU, Academician of NAOC reported on “Review and Prospect of the Optical Sky Survey”. WU Xue-Bing, Associate Director of KIAA, Director of DoA of PKU, and Director of CSST PKU Center, reported on the construction scheme of the center. Other special invited guests and colleagues expressed their sincere congratulations and best wishes for the center, and gave their suggestions on its construction, operation, research, talents tanning and collaborations.
