Siyao Xu Awarded the 2019 IUPAP Young Scientist Prize

Siyao Xu

Siyao Xu, a recent graduate from the PhD program in astronomy at PKU, was awarded the 2019 International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Young Scientist Prize for the Commission on Astroparticle Physics (C4) at the 36thInternational Cosmic Ray Conference in Madison, USA. Dr. Xu received the award for her “fundamental theoretical contributions to Astroparticle physics that reveal profound connections among diverse phenomena”.

This prize recognizes the “outstanding contribution of a young scientist to the area of Astroparticle Physics”. Dr. Xu’s research focuses on the cosmic ray propagation and particle acceleration in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence and their applications to high-energy astrophysical environments. Her work demonstrates the importance of a proper description of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in studying astroparticle physics.

Dr. Xu graduated with a PhD from the Department of Astronomy, School of Physics, at Peking University in 2017. She is currently a Hubble Fellow at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The 2019 International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Young Scientist Prize for the Commission on Astroparticle Physics has been awarded to 14 scientists since its inception 2007.  Dr. Xu was one of two winners in 2019, along with Professor Anna Nelles at DESY Zeuthen and Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen Nuremberg. Past winners include Professor Gang Li at University of Alabama in Huntsville and Daniel Mazin at Max Planck Institute for Physics.
